Captain Vijayakanth is CM front-runner for TN in 2016

Captain Vijayakanth has made his ambitions clear in his speech to his party workers over the last week-end. He has asserted in his speech that with Superstar Rajinikanth refusing to be drawn into the BJP’s bandwagon, he was the front runner to the Chief-minister-ship of the state.

Captain will settle for nothing less than CM in 2016!
Captain will settle for nothing less than CM in 2016!

Elections to TN will be held somewhere in 2016, unless there is a drastic change in plans, where the present ADMK government may call for dissolution of the present assembly, and call for snap polls. Some political observers feel that this is a possibility, provided the ousted CM Jayalalitha comes out of her legal wrangles in the disproportionate assets case, which has convicted her along with Sasikala and a few others. Incidentally, Jaya’s appeal is to be heard in the Bangalore High Court today. However, it could be just the beginning of a fairly long drawn process.

Some party workers in the meeting venue where Vijayakanth laid his plans clear however felt that just in case the BJP agrees to the ally DMDK holding the CM chair, it would be Premalatha Vijayakanth who would be the partys choice, and even Vijayakanth would bide by the party’s choice.

The BJP camp is Tamilnadu is amused by these developments; while the leadership in the state Unit would take the actor ally’s speech with a pinch of salt, they will also be left wondering if the DMDK is trying pressure tactics for a larger chunk of seat sharing.

However, political observers feel that elections 2016 in TN are a long way to go, and Vijayakanth’s utterances are too premature.

As the classic adage goes – 2 years is a long long time in politics.

Dr Tharoor cleans up the famous Vizhinjam beach… is it a political storm on the beach side?

Shashi Tharoor, MP from Trivandrum, and presently persona non grata with the Congress leadership, thanks to his bipartisan views on the “Clean India” campaign call by PM Narendra Modi, in a sense has done it again, much to the chagrin of his party and party-men.

He extended his support to the clean India campaign of the PM by clean up the famous Vizhinjam beach, just 14 kms away from the center of his constituency, Trivandrum.

Apart from tweeting in reply to the Prime Ministers call for support to a Clean India, Dr Tharoor also posted a video of the event and his speech with an appeal to PM Modi that funds be allocated by the centre to help revive the polluted Parvathi Puthanar falling in his home constituency.

While many neutral political observers have indeed lauded Dr Tharoor for his support for the cause of a Clean India, the video and the MP’s speech has left many in the Congress circles wondering if its now a mere formality that the suave leader will formally exit the party, that is battered owing to a series of electoral debacles under the leadership of the mother-son duo, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

Modi may attend Maha swearing in… but quandary over protocol?!

PM Narendra Modi is likely to attend the swearing in ceremony of the BJP or BJP led government in Maharashtra, as and when it happens.

However, officials of the state governments protocol wing are in a quandary over how the seating arrangements are to be made, just in case Modi does attend the grand swearing in at the precincts of the Mantralaya.

Leaders of the state BJP seem to be of the opinion that the state officials must keep a watch on the swearing ceremony of the M L Khattar led government today, to see how the PM Modi is seated in that function.

“We suggested them that they should watch where PM sits during the swearing-in ceremony of Haryana government today and accordingly make seating arrangements here,” one leader stated.

Looks like the Haryana government officials did not ponder that much on the protocol challenge as this video of the today’s swearing in depicts.

Egg Freezing – Perk or illusion? What does India think?

The likes of Facebook and Google, may have created a huge buzz in the global media on how the women who chose to make their careers with them will now enjoy a very unique perk. Sure, names in the silicon valley would follow. The perks are a pay of up-to $20000 for freezing the egg of the women, who will then go on to make a blazing career, and postpone the joy of child bearing to a later date.

Experts in India, however, opine that the euphoria over such a perk is misplaced, and may not really work in the Indian context. This is mainly due to the cultural and value ecosystem, due to which a married women may really not be able to postpone having children for a long time.

Dr Samundi Sankari, Founder and Medical Director, Srusthi IVF Fertility Centre opined – “Its a wrong notion to think that every women who has her eggs frozen would be successful in bearing a child at a much later date. Although, we have the technology that can freeze eggs for posterity, the fact remains that there are a host of other factors involved in a successful IVF procedure. It will be ethically wrong to portray that such perks are a guarantee for a healthy pregnancy and child. Freezing eggs does not guarantee any such. Also, the IVF process, by its invasive nature, offers only a much lesser rate of success at a later age of women.”

For a HR perspective, we spoke to D Venkatesan, Director of Chennai headquartered search firm Strides Consulting. He said – “In my experience of managing rewards for candidates, what really works as a morale booster at the workplace are tangible rewards. Egg freezing perks, clearly are grossly misleading from the point of the final outcome. Its just a hype, and the cash rich valley techies are making much ado about nothing, with their ability to throw cash. In the case of egg-freezing, when we consider the view of medical professionals, it is clear that the outcome is not just assured”

“There are many other ways in which the corporate can communicate that the women employees are more than equal; Egg Freezing perks certainly do not in reality make the women equal” he emphatically added.

Clearly, India Inc may not be enthused with the hue and cry on Egg Freezing perks its look like

PM Modi meets press at BJP HQ – more of a mainline media ‘selfie’ opportunity!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took time off from his hectic schedule to meet a host of media people at the BJP Party headquarters this afternoon (25th Oct). Most of the leading lights of prominent TV channels and print media were present there.

Party president Amit Shah welcomed and next to that PM Modi addressed the media – his brief speech focused on his Clean India campaign, and how the media was playing a very constructive role in informing people of the same, and propelling them into action.

After the speech, he mixed with those present for informal interactions.

While there was a promise from the PM of more similar interactions in the coming times, the event was marked by the lack of any serious attempt by Shri Modi to take up questions on more serious issues.

For most in the media, it was a good opportunity to wish the PM in person, and get a now in vogue ‘selfie’ shot.  And none of them were complaining of content as per seasoned observers.
